Landscaping Kansas City
Winter Care: Trees and Shrubs
You spend a lot of time during the warm weather months ensuring your yard looks fantastic. Mowing the grass, trimming the hedges, pruning the trees, and weeding your garden all serve to make your neighbors green with envy over your fabulous yard. But, what kind of maintenance does it need during the winter? The elements can be damaging to the greenery you work so hard to protect during the summer. Follow these tips for safely caring for your trees and shrubs in the winter weather.
1. Gently Remove Snow from Greenery
Snow can weigh down boughs and cause breakage. Use a broom to gently shake the snow from your trees boughs, and from the tops of your shrubs.
2. Do Not Attempt to Remove Ice
If your greenery is coated in ice, attempting to remove it can cause breakage and irreparable damage to the fragile limbs and leaves. Wait for Mother Nature to melt the ice in this situation.
3. Cover It up
Certain plants that are susceptible to injury from the ice or snow should be covered with burlap when a winter storm is anticipated.
4. Rope It in
Young or fragile trees or shrubbery may benefit from the temporary support of rope or twine. Weak crotches may require bracing.
5. Prune, Prune, Prune
Keep on top of pruning your trees to prevent limbs from growing too long and breaking under the weight of snow or a heavy ice load. Have a skilled professional come out to remove deadwood from your trees.
6. Keep It Clean
Keep dead leaves and other debris cleared from underneath disease-susceptible trees to keep them healthy and prevent them from weakening.
A layer of thick mulch around your trees will protect them from extreme cold and temperature fluctuations, as well as conserve moisture around the roots.
8. Use an Anti-Desiccant
A great deal of damage shrubs and evergreens suffer in the winter is due to desiccation, or drying out. Once the ground has frozen, these plants are unable to extract water with their roots, so they draw it from their leaves instead. Spray these plants with a natural, biodegradable desiccant to help them retain their moisture until the ground thaws.
9. Remove Dead, Diseased, or Dangerous Trees
Any tree with limbs that overhang your house, cars, or yard need to be evaluated for safety. If they’re in a weakened state due to disease, pests, etc, they need to be removed before the strain of snow and ice further weakens their limbs.

With the 2017 landscaping season beginning, we wanted to share some of the curb appeal trends we have noticed so far in 2017.
This may seem like an obvious trend but clients have been asking for more than just greenery. Trees and hedges create a beautiful yard but adding color takes your yard to the next level. Spending just a little more to add some color to your yard will make your landscaping the hit of the neighborhood. We aren’t just talking about flowers, bulbs, shrubs, borders, fencing and mulch all give your yard that extra pop you desire.
More so than any other year, we have noticed that our customers desire a more modern design for their yards. Taking a more minimalist approach to both hardscapes and landscapes can give your yard that clean and modern look that you see in almost every home and garden magazine. Our designers are enjoying this new take on landscaping in the Kansas City region and are looking forward to creating beautiful, modern landscapes that increase the curb appeal of your home.
Stone Veneer…It’s Seriously All the Rage
One of the hottest trends in landscaping this year is stone veneer. Creating hardscapes out of this material may be an option for those who desire a more craftsman and rugged design. With a cheaper price tag and easy installation methods, stone veneer is a simple way to upgrade your yard. The greatest part…its nearly indistinguishable from full stonework.
Ditch the Lawn
With such cold winters and hot summers, maintaining a lawn in Kansas is almost next to impossible. As people desire a green yard all year, lawn-like alternatives have become increasingly more popular. By adding turf to your yard you can decrease maintenance costs and aid in decreasing the environmental impact of fertilizing, pest-control treatments and other chemical maintenance methods. While we do not think that traditional lawns are going anywhere anytime soon, being open to the idea of a lawn-like alternative may give you the yard you have always dreamed of.

The benefits of a Retaining Wall.
If you care about your home’s landscaping, you can protect the design and aesthetic of your outdoor living space with a concrete retaining wall. Adding a retaining wall can also enhance the landscape further, or provide you a central point around which to bring your new landscape design to life. Read on to learn more about the benefits about installing retaining walls, then contact your retaining wall contractor, to bring this important element to your home.
Prevent Shifting Soil
The biggest reason to install a concrete retaining wall, is to keep soil in place. Soil can shift overtime due to gravity, weather, and settling, and when it moves it can bring anything that’s on top of it, including trees, benches, or anything else that makes up your landscape design. Depending on how bad the problem is, soil shifting or settling can also lead to foundation cracks as the soil underneath the home also moves.
Level Graded Areas
If your home sits on top of a hill or your landscape is steeply graded, retaining walls will allow you to create level areas where your family and guests can enjoy your property without fighting a steep hill. Even if your yard doesn’t slope very much, a retaining wall can help you have the perfectly flat and well-manicured lawn you’ve always wanted.
Multiple Uses and Functionalities
A surprising benefit of installing a retaining wall is all of the other uses you’ll have for your new landscape feature. Retaining walls can double as planters, benches, steps, or even as part of an outdoor living space such as a deck our outdoor kitchen. Talk to a retaining wall design and installation company in Kansas City to find out what you can do with your new retaining wall.

Examining the ROI of Landscape Improvements
Whether you’re looking to sell your home in the future or you just want to invest in your property, there are several landscaping projects that can add real value to your home. But you don’t want to make upgrades just for the sake of doing so. Instead, you should focus on making improvements that provide the biggest return on investment (ROI).
The ROI of landscaping varies from project to project. For example, real estate experts say smart landscape design decisions can yield an ROI of anywhere from 200-400%.
Well-planned landscaping improvements go a long way in adding curb appeal and increasing the functional usage and value of your property. Whenever you’re making upgrades to your home, you should consult with a landscaping professional. In doing so, you’ll be able to get more information about features buyers are looking for and the cost and options of projects that will provide you with the biggest return on investment in your local area.
These are some of the best choices when making upgrades to your property:
1. Landscape Design
If you’re considering making any upgrades to your home, landscape design should be the first on your list because plantings are one of the few things that continue to add value over time.
Remember that trees and shrubs take time to mature. So if you’re adding trees as a way to increase the value of your property before you sell, you should plan in advance and start early.
Look for a company who can handle all aspects of your project including design, plant selection, project management, installation and with great customer service.
2. Add Large Specimen Trees
Even if you already have modestly-sized shrubs in your landscape design, consider adding two to four large specimen trees. They cost more than your average tree or shrub, but they provide a great return on investment. Just remember to give your large trees plenty of water as they continue to grow the first couple years.
3. Repair Lawn Areas
A property with dead spots and tons of weeds can prevent people from wanting to look at your home. It makes potential buyers think that the property isn’t well cared for and that they’ll need to spend a lot of money on maintenance on other neglected items.
One of the best ways to add curb appeal is to clean up and repair your existing lawn. You can do this by:
- Treating your lawn with selective weed control materials
- Reseeding your lawn
- Applying fertilizer
- Controlling lawn insects that damage the lawn
- Replace lawn areas with new sod
Although some of these tasks seem small, they can make a huge difference in improving the appearance of your property.
4. Paving Stone Driveways
Replacing an old concrete driveway with paving stones is another great way to add curb appeal. Buyers are always looking for reasons to get sellers to lower their price, and an old, cracked driveway gives them a good reason to do so.
Paving stones come in a variety of different styles, colors and textures, making it easy to find a design that fits your style and matches the architecture of your home. And because paving stones are more durable than concrete and asphalt, it will last for decades.
5. Trim Shrubs and Prune Trees
Trees and shrubs require maintenance, but too often, homeowners neglect this aspect of landscaping. When not taken care of, trees and shrubs can crowd walkways or driveways, cover windows, block views and cause safety and security hazards.
If your trees and shrubs have gotten out of hand, it may be best to hire a landscaping company or reputable tree service to handle the trimming and pruning.
6. Remove and Replace Old Plants
If you haven’t kept up with maintenance for your plants and shrubs, there’s a chance you won’t be able to trim them. In this case, you’ll want to take out these plants and replace them with new varieties.
7. Low-Maintenance Pondless Water Features
In an area like Kansas City, pondless water features are a great way to enhance the look of your home without requiring too much maintenance. A low-maintenance water feature such as a fountain or pondless waterfall can help future buyers to fall in love with not only the sights, but the sounds of your backyard oasis.
8. Add Color to Your Landscape
Eye-catching plants increase curb appeal, and colorful foliage is one of the many great ways to do this. For as little as a few hundred dollars, you can add a variety of colorful plants to areas on your Kansas City property.
Perennials are another great way to add multi-seasonal color, and they’re inexpensive compared to trees and shrubs. Also, consider adding a few nicely planted container gardens at your front entrance, back patio or any other area where you want to draw attention.
Just make sure you choose the right plants for your property, such as ones that are native or drought-resistant, since they’re better able to survive in Kansas City weather. If you need help choosing plants, please contact us.
9. Outdoor Kitchens
Visitors and potential buyers may not see your backyard right away, but creating an outdoor entertaining space can make a lasting impression – as long as it’s designed correctly.
When designing an outdoor kitchen, some features to include could be built-in appliances, grills, a fireplace and seating areas. The best part about these outdoor spaces is that people begin to envision themselves cooking and entertaining guests, allowing them to fall in love with your property.
10. Maintaining Landscape Beds
One of the best ways to make a property presentable is to maintain landscape beds on a regular basis. Doing these tasks each year will help your property to keep a pristine appearance:
- Pull weeds and apply pre-emergent weed control
- Edge mulch beds where they meet grass areas.
- Add a two-inch layer of mulch to plant beds
Landscaping Projects that Provide the Least Value
While there are plenty of landscaping projects that provide great ROI, such as the ones above, not all projects provide maximum return.
In Kansas City, pools can sometimes add very little value and could even detract from your home’s value. Not all potential buyers want pools. However, in luxury neighborhoods, pools could be a must-have feature.
It’s worth noting that while ROI is important, it’s equally important to have a space that you love. If you plan on staying in your home for a long time and having a pool will provide many hours of entertainment, it may still be worth the investment. The personal enjoyment you and your family will experience as you relax and entertain is priceless.
